Question:  What makes our water level Fluctuate so much?

Answer:  The Lake Holden Drainage Basin

Lake Holden is Located in Sections 2, 10, and 11, Township 23 South, and Range 29 East in Orange County. The Lake Holden drainage basin, which is landlocked for all but extreme conditions, is approximately 911 acres in size. For Extreme events, Lake Holden discharges to the Boggy Creek Drainage Basin. Topography in the Lake Holden basin is of moderately low relief, with elevations ranging between 91 and 110 feet.

The Land use in the Lake Holden drainage basin is primarily of urban composition, and includes single-family and multi-family residential areas and commercial properties with the drainage basin boundaries.

Land use surrounding Lake Holden is a mixture of urban commercial, urban residential, and agricultural. The majority of the shoreline is developed as single family residential, the remaining (as of 1991) parcels are citrus groves. No native upland vegetative associations occur within the study area. The primary source of water for this lake is stormwater drainage and sheet flow drainage from the surrounding developed land.

Soils in the lake Holden drainage basin are categorized in the Soil survey of Orange County, as "Urban Land-Taveres-Pomello" and described as "nearly level to gently sloping, moderately well drained soils that are sandy throughout; some have an organic-stained subsoil at a depth of 30 to 50 inches; most areas have been modified for urban use." (Soil Conservation Service, "Soil Survey of Orange County, Florida," August 1989.)

According to the drainwell study prepared by Orange County for Lake Holden (Orange County Engineering Department, "Analysis of Drainwells B-66 and B- 70," March 20 1987. [aka "Lake Holden Drainwell Study"]) two drainwells provide the only outfall for the lake at the present time. The Normal high water level (NHWL) for Lake Holden is 91.00 (above sea level) as established by Orange County in 1983 (Orange County Engineering Department, "Lake Index - Orange County, Florida," May 1983 (Revised February 1987). The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA "Flood Insurance Study - Orange County, Florida, Unincorporated Areas," June 1, 1981) indicates a 100 year flood elevation for the lake of 92.8 above sea level.

The drainwells at Lake Holden posses differing structural characteristics. These characteristics are summarized below.
