Lake Notes… Water Advisor Board Meeting By Lionel Robbins, WAB Chairman (407-859-3050)

The Board had some VIP’s at our meetings recently.  In June, Commissioner Patty Sheehan visited to meet our newest members Dana and Caroline.  Patty answered numerous questions from the Board and attendees.  Commissioner Pete Clarke and his Senior Aide Mercedes Fonseca visited in July. Commissioner Clarke was very interested in the discussion about the Westmoreland detention pond.  Short story is that he has met with other officials and is making progress on a possible agreement that might be advantageous for Lake Holden’s MSTU.  The pond needs to be retrofitted but if the funds come from the MSTU, the pond maintenance becomes the WAB’s responsibility in perpetuity.  None of the Board Members were in favor of that idea.

Your WAB members are vigilant and focused on the continued monitoring of water quality in Lake Holden.  They are aware of possible declining water clarity as time passes and have not ruled out the possibility on another whole-lake alum treatment.   Also keeping an open mind on other projects to control invasive vegetation, even the possibility of stocking some Grass Carp.

EPD performed a BioBase survey in July 2017 to assess pondweed in areas restricting public navigation.  EPD will consult with the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) on amendments to Lake Holden’s aquatic plant removal permit.  A greater area of pond weed will be treated and they also performed block treatments of Hydrilla verticillata in the north and southwest portions of the lake on March 31, 2017.  Spot treatments were performed on April 12, 2017.  Pondweed will continue to be monitored.

MSTU Budget Account Balance as of April 19, 2017 = $686,054

Annual Taxes Collected To Date = $123,841 (anticipated $135,000 for 2017)
